Staff Policies

Our hospital places great emphasis on its staff. We provide excellent working conditions and education to ensure our clients receive the best service and their animals the very best treatment. As you will see from our academic record all our staff are exceptionally well trained. Not only do we provide study leave for conference attendance for both Veterinarians and Nurses but also we promote further education. We provide in house lectures and training and naturally we have a full up to date library.

The practice is an AVA accredited new graduate friendly practice and we are committed to support the transition of graduating veterinarians into the practice environment. New graduates are assigned one or two mentors from our more experienced staff.

 

Meet Our Staff

Roger Clarke, BVSc, FACVSc, DVSc (Melb hc)

Roger graduated from the University of Queensland in 1964. In 1969 Roger started the Bundoora Veterinary Clinic and has run the practice since its opening. Prior to Bundoora, Roger worked in Korumburra Victoria (1965-1967) and Warwickshire UK (1967-1968).

Roger achieved his Membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in Canine Surgery in 1982. In 1991 Roger became a Fellow of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Surgery. Training for his fellowship was undertaken at the Universities of Queensland and Minnesota and at the Animal Medical Center in New York.

Roger became a Registered Veterinary Specialist of Small Animal Surgery in Queensland and Victoria in 1991, and in 2003 Roger was awarded a Doctor of Veterinary Science (hc,) from the University of Melbourne.

Roger has received many awards over his career:

  • 1981 Churchill Fellowship to study Veterinary Nursing Education in the USA
  • 1985 Australian Small Animal Vet Association distinguished service award
  • 1985 Australian Veterinary Association meritorious Service Award
  • 1988 Australian Small Animal Vet Association Practitioner of the year
  • 1993 IVENTA Award for the best scientific paper presented at World Small Animal Vet Association, Berlin
  • 1995 Fellow of the Australian Veterinary Association
  • 1996 Prize for International liaison efforts on behalf of American Animal Hospital Association, San Antonio CA
  • 2002 World Small Animal Vet Association / Waltham award for service to the profession
  • 2005 Awarded the Gilruth Prize for Service to the Profession by the Australian Veterinary Association. This is the highest award the Australian Veterinary Association can make to its members.
  • 2006 Awarded the American Animal Hospital Association - Royal Canin Award for the Veterinarian contributing most to International Veterinary Science and Animal Welfare.
  • 2006 Awarded the Australian Small Animal Vet Association Distinguished Service for the second time
  • 2008 Awarded the Hill's Animal Welfare and Humane Ethics Award for his service to worldwide animal welfare

Roger has presented articles at many conferences all over the world. He has contributed to the professional development of many veterinarians in Asia and Sri Lanka. Roger was the foundation Chairman of the Federation of Asian Small Animal Veterinary Associations (FASAVA) and is currently he is Co Chairman of the WSAVA Animal Welfare committee and Chairman of the WSAVA committee for continuing education in Asia.

Most of all, Roger loves surgery and the chance to help animals recover to live a happy and healthy life. Outside of work Roger enjoys spending time at his farm in Flowerdale Australia or exploring the world.

Brian O'Donohoe, BVSc (Qld)

Dr Brian O'Donohoe BVSc, graduated from the University of Queensland and has had extensive post-graduate experience working in Australia, the Isle of Man and New Zealand. Brian joined the staff of the Bundoora Veterinary Hospital in 1979 and has been a partner since 1981.

Brian's interests are in dentistry, diabetes and general canine and feline medicine and surgery. Brian is particularly interested in Medicine and loves working with people to make their pets better.

Apart from his love of Veterinary science Brian enjoys his family life and has two very active sons. Brian also likes spending time in his native garden.

Birgitte (Gitte) Horn, BVSc, (Melb), MVS, FACVSc (Canine Medicine)

Birgitte graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1990. After some time in general practice in both Melbourne and New Zealand, Gitte undertook 4 years of further training, completing an intern and residency program at The University of Melbourne, where she  obtained her qualification of Membership of the Australian College of veterinary scientists and Master of Veterinary Studies. Further study at the North Carolina State University (USA) and Murdoch University (WA) enabled Birgitte to obtain her Fellowship of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists and subsequently became qualified as a Canine Medical Specialist in 2001.

Gitte sees many referrals and is always ready to discuss a case with a referring vet. Birgitte's area of expertise involves the investigation, diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of disorders affecting many of the internal organs. Amongst the many causes of disease, cancer is a common problem diagnosed and treated. Although Birgitte's Specialist qualification is in canine medicine, she is also happy to treat feline patients

Outside of work Gitte loves spending time with her son Benjamin, cycling, horse riding and spending time at her bush property. She is very passionate about saving our environment.

Terry Bassett, BVSc, B.Phil, MVS, MACVSc (Emergency and Critical Care), MACVSc (Feline Medicine)

Terry Graduated from Massey University (New Zealand) in 1994. After graduation, Terry worked for seven years in mixed veterinary practice in Patea, New Zealand. As a veterinary student, Terry also gained a Bachelor of Philosophy degree with research into the "Application of Polymerase Chain Reaction to the detection of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis in Sheep. In 2000, Terry took up a resident's Position in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care at the University of Melbourne's Western Animal Emergency Centre. Whilst working at the University Terry earned a Masters in Veterinary Studies. His thesis topic was entitled "Effects of Tiger Snake Venom on the Canine Coagulation System". In 2001 Terry passed the entrance exams and was as a member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in the Emergency and Critical Care Chapter. He also passed the exams for Membership in Medicine of Cats in 2004.

Terry started work at the Bundoora Veterinary Hospital in 2002 where he works frequently in the Northern Suburbs Animal Emergency Centre, doing the overnight shift from 6pm until 8am.

Terry and Katie have recently become the proud parents of Alexander. When not at work Terry actively contributes to his local community as a member of the Country Fire Authority. He also enjoys cycling and carpentry.

Susan Beeby, BVSc (Syd), MVS

Susan graduated from the University of Sydney with first class honours in 1997. In 1998 she started work at Bundoora Veterinary Hospital where she remained apart from a short stint as a locum in Sydney. Susan has an interest in medicine, especially feline medicine and also cytology. In 2006 Susan completed her Masters in Veterinary Studies degree through Western Australia's acclaimed Murdoch University Veterinary Faculty.

Out of work Susan's main interests include spending time with husband Adam and her three young children, as well as her two indulged cats Soba and Wasabe.

Susan is also a keen triathlon enthusiast and competes in Olympic distances and half iron man events.

Margaret Cohn-Urbach, BVSc (Sydney)

Margaret graduated from the University of Sydney with Merit in 2009. She has a special interest in Canine and Feline medicine.

In her spare time - Margaret is a talented photographer (see our website photos!). She also enjoys playing tennis and exploring Melbourne.

Abbie Couper, BVSc (Melb), B. Biom. Sc, hon degree medical research

Abbie graduated from The University of Melbourne in 2009 and joined our team soon after. Before beginning her veterinary degree, Abbie completed a Batchelor in Biomedical Science and an honours degree in medical research - both at The University of Melbourne.

Abbie has a special interest in canine medicine and dermatology.

Abbie has a rabbit called Stanley and frequently returns home to cuddle her family's geriatric maltese x shih-tzu 'Buddy' and couch potato whippets, 'Ruby' and 'Ollie'. Outside of work, Abbie enjoys cooking, catching up with friends, travelling and shopping!

Genevieve Fredericks, BVSc (Qld Hons)

Genevieve graduated from the University of Queensland with 1st class honours in 2002 and started work at the Bundoora Veterinary Hospital in 2003. As an undergraduate Genevieve worked as a Veterinary Nurse at the RSPCA and also at the Bardon Veterinary Clinic in Brisbane.

Genevieve's Veterinary interests include medicine of both cats and dogs.

When not at work, Genevieve enjoys horse riding, bush walking and reading.

Victoria Harrington, BBiomedSc (Monash), BVSc (Sydney)

Before commencing her veterinary degree Victoria attained a Bachelor of Biomedical Science from Monash University. Victoria then undertook Veterinary Science at Sydney University where she graduated with honours in December 2007.

Victoria joined Bundoora Veterinary Clinic in 2007 and is now a valued member of our veterinary team.

Victoria loves her job and has a particular interest in all things canine - in particular surgery and dermatology. Victoria is also interested in the rescue and rehoming of pound/shelter animals.

Out of work Victoria loves to keep fit by swimming and working out at the gym. One of her favourite pastimes is spending time with her 2 beautiful and mischievous Jack Russell X dogs - Barney and Scruffy!

Mariko Ike, BVSc (Melb)

Mariko is a 2003 University of Melbourne graduate. She started working at Bundoora Vet Clinic & Hospital immediately after graduating and stayed with us for four years before heading off to the UK. Mariko rejoined our team of vets at Bundoora in 2010.

Mariko owns 2 dogs, 2 cats and a rabbit! She loves all things British - especially Agatha Christie, Blackadder and Stehphen Fry!

Catherine Lang, BVSc (Murdoch) MACVSc (Small animal

Catherine graduated from Murdoch University (WA) with honours in 2002. After graduation Catherine worked in the United Kingdom for 2 years and Mildura for 2 years. She joined Bundoora Veterinary Clinic in late 2007.

Catherine is interested in small animal medicine and has a Membership in Canine Medicine from the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists.

Out of work Catherine is interested in travelling, rowing, spending time with friends, dining out and live music.

Simon Marston, B Vet Med (London)

Simon graduated with his veterinary degree from the Royal Veterinary College at the University of London in 1971. He migrated to Australia and worked at Bundoora for three years before returning to the UK to establish his own practice at Kingston on Thames.

In 1981 Simon returned to Australia and commenced practice in Eltham where he worked until 2006. He sold the Eltham practice and moved back to Bundoora and now works at the Mill Park Veterinary Clinic.

Simon has also been involved in charity work overseas as a veterinarian and has worked in India establishing spay clinics for the poorer areas.

Out of work Simon enjoys family, golf, travel, reading and crosswords.

Eben Martin, BVSc (Melb)

Eben graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2010 and joined our team soon after. Eben was particularly excited about working in this area as he grew up in Arthurs Creek and now lives locally. He is very keen to give back to the community which has already given him so much.

Eben is very interested in small animal surgery, diagnostic ultrasound and emergency medicine. He also has a special interest in birds, particularly poultry.

Outside of work, Eben plays Victorian Premier cricket for Melbourne University and is ever striving for higher honours. He is also involved in athletics throughout the winter in a sporting regime that keeps him very busy!

Ranjit Patney, BVSc, MAppSc (Microbiology/Biotechnology)

Ranjit graduated as a veterinarian from the Madras Veterinary College in India in 2000. He worked as a veterinarian at the Polyveterinary Clinic in Agra for 8 months.

After migrating to Australia in 2001 Ranjit gained a Masters Degree in Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology from RMIT. Ranjit's thesis topic was entitled "Novel Mutants of Dapsone Resistant Plasmodium falciparum. His research was completed at CSIRO Parkville.

Ranjit worked at Bundoora Veterinary Hospital as a technician while completing a bridging course at the University of Melbourne's Veterinary School and graduated BVSc (Melb) in 2006. He then commenced work with us as a veterinarian in DEC 2006 and is a valued member of our full-time veterinary staff.

Ranjit and his wife Lumin have a lovely daughter Nikita and much of Ranjit's spare time is spent with his family. Ranjit also enjoys travelling.

Emily Rushford, BVSc (Hons)

 

Emily graduated with honours from the University of Melbourne in 1999. She began working at the Bundoora Veterinary Hospital in December of that year.

Emily's veterinary interests are mainly in medicine of the dog and cats, including emergency medicine.

Emily married Tim Stewart, who was also working at Bundoora at that time, and now they have a lovely boy Charlie and a girl Pippa.

Emily now teaches at the Box Hill College of TAFE in veterinary nursing and works part time at Bundoora.

Outside of veterinary science, Emily enjoys her family, camping, hiking, reading and the consumption of good food and wine.

Jonathan Sullivan, BVSc, MACVSc (Small Animal Surgery)

Jon graduated from the University of Queensland in 1982. Prior to joining Bundoora Veterinary Clinic in 1984 he worked as a vet in Darling Downs in Queensland.

Jon has his Australian College of Veterinary Scientists Membership in small animal surgery. He is one of our senior surgeons and undertakes many soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries and is Roger's "right hand man".

Jon lives with Erin who teaches at the Box Hill College of TAFE and is a former veterinary nurse at the Bundoora Veterinary Hospital. They have several cats and Jon pretends not to like them

Out of work Jon is very interested in aviation and can be seen every year at the Avalon air show.

Lindy Tan, BVSc (hons) WA

Lindy graduated from Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia in 2009 with honours. She moved from the warm shores of Perth to brave the unpredictable weather in Melbourne, especially to work with us here at Bundoora vet Clinic & Hospital.

When not at work, Lindy and her husband James enjoy exploring Melbourne and spending time with their fur-kid "Marzo".

Heather Tilley, BVSc (Massey) Dip Pract Mgt (Vet) CMAVA

Heather graduated from Massey University (New Zealand) in 1990 and commenced work at the Bundoora Veterinary Hospital that same year. Heather is accredited by the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service and can perform export health checks, exotic disease vaccinations and certification for cats and dogs travelling out of Australia.

Heather also has a keen interest in dog breeding and canine pediatrics. In 2003, Heather completed the 12 month Distance Education course in Small Animal Medicine conducted by the Post Graduate Foundation in Veterinary Science.

When not at work Heather's interests include showing her dogs, Dog Agility, socialising with friends and reading.

Charlotte Witty, BVSc (Qld Hons)

Charlotte graduated from the University of Queensland in late 2007 with first class honours. Since graduation she has been working at Bundoora Veterinary Clinic and has proved to be one of our most valuable veterinary surgeons. Charlotte is always cheerful and always ready to help anyone with their animal's problems.

Out of work Charlotte enjoys shopping and catching up with friends and she loves a good movie. Charlotte shares her home with her 2 gorgeous cats "Audrey" and "Pierre" and her cute and cheeky Jack Russell "Amelia".

Rebecca Bellville, ACVN

Rebecca received her Advanced Certificate in Vet Nursing from Box Hill Institute of TAFE in 1996. Rebecca also has a Diploma of Education in Music.

Rebecca joined Bundoora Veterinary Hospital in December 1993. Her veterinary interests include surgical nursing and birds.

Out of work Rebecca enjoys camping and bushwalking, reading, dog obedience and spending time with her two children Nicholas and Georgia.

Del Biviano

Del started her veterinary nursing training "on-the-job" at the Tatura Veterinary Clinic in 1969. Del worked in Tatura in mixed practice for 10 years, assisting in the bovine brucellosis eradication program.

Del's time at Bundoora Veterinary Hospital started in 1979 where she worked for 12 months before taking a break to raise her family, Del returned to the Bundoora Veterinary Team in 2001. Del enjoys working with our animal patients and is constantly amazed at the depth of the human-animal bond.

When not looking after her family at home, Del spends her time looking after her other family at Bundoora. A whiz in the kitchen, we enjoy her many cakes, desserts and her fantastic lasagna.

When not at work, Del enjoys Rock-n-Roll music, dancing and reading.

Cindy Cattach, ACVN

Cindy is a qualified veterinary nurse and has been nursing for almost 18 years (and still loves it!) - 12 of those years have been in Emergency and Critical Care facilities around Melbourne. Cindy was Head nurse of the University of Melbourne Animal Emergency Centre for 6 years before joining our team at Bundoora in 2008.

Cindy has a special interest in Emergency & Critical Care (and is currently completing a diploma in this area) and also anaesthetic monitoring of large exotic animals - Cindy also works part time at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Cindy is actively involved in the training and mentoring of junior staff at Bundoora and particular loves to work the overnight emergency shift!

Cindy is a vegetarian and a passionate supporter of animal rights. She has a beautiful son "Ashton" and a menagerie of animals - including a very cheeky Jack Russell X Maltese called "Brewster".

Tanja Fischer, ACVN

Tanja achieved her Advanced Certificate in Veterinary Nursing from Box Hill Institute of TAFE in 1990. Tanja joined Bundoora Veterinary Clinic in 1987 and has been here ever since, though she did have a break at Marlin Coast Vet Clinic in Cairns, from May to November 1989.

Tanja enjoys rehabilitating and caring for Australian wildlife. She has a gorgeous son "Aiydan" whom she loves spending quality time with.

Adriana Geslicki, ACVN

Adriana graduated from the Box Hill TAFE in 1995, having completed the 2 year certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing. Following graduation she worked at the Reservoir Veterinary Clinic for seven years prior to joining the Bundoora Veterinary Team in 2000.

Adriana also has a keen interest in canine behaviour and training and runs our popular puppy preschool. Adriana has attended several seminars presented by Specialists in Animal Behaviour and is a Delta Society Canine Good Citizen (2004).

When not at work, Adriana enjoys her twin boys and netball, squash, swimming and reading.

Melissa Lohse, ACVN

Melissa started at Bundoora Veterinary Hospital in 2002 and graduated from NMIT in 2003 with certificates IV in Veterinary Nursing. She also has a certificate in dog training.

Melissa holds a certificate in first aid and while working at Bundoora she gained her Advanced Certificate in Veterinary Nursing.

Outside of veterinary nursing, Melissa enjoys water skiing, spending time with her son Tailym and going out with friends.

Belinda Marchbank, BSc, ACVN

Belinda began nursing in 1997 at the St Helena Veterinary surgery whilst studying cert IV in Animal Technology. She also completed a Batchelor in Animal Science, graduating in 2001.

Belinda then gained her certificate IV in veterinary nursing in 2010 and a certificate IV in Training and assessment in the same year! She also works at Box Hill Tafe a couple of days per week supervising veterinary nursing students. Currently Belinda is studying the Diploma of Veterinary nursing (general practice).

Belinda enjoys all aspects of nursing, especially developing relationships with regular customers and patients. She has a soft spot for giant breed dogs - particularly Newfoundlands.

Currently Belinda shares her home with a young and very cheeky tortoiseshell and tabby domestic short hair cat, an impish young son and a VERY patient husband!

Katie O'Neill, Veterinary Nurse

Katie graduated with Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing from the Box Hill College of TAFE. She has worked continuously with us except for a short period when she left to have her lovely son and daughter.

Libby Perkins, ACVN

Libby graduated from the Box Hill Institute of TAFE in 1980 and was the Dux of her course. Following this achievement, she was ASAVA Runner up for Australian Veterinary Nurse of the Year in 1981.

Libby first worked at Bundoora Veterinary Hospital from 1976-1987. She returned in 1999. Libby is in charge of many of the administration tasks and her efforts keep us organized and running smoothly.

When not working at Bundoora Veterinary Clinic Libby has a strong interest in catering. Another kitchen whiz, we act as quality control surveyors for the newest kitchen experiment, giving most the "double thumbs up".

Maria Ranno, BA (Bachelor Arts)

Maria first joined us at Bundoora in 1998. Maria spent some time travelling around Europe after secondary school and returned to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993.

Maria loves to travel and has done so many times during her time with us. She has travelled to Asia and she spent 6 months in Africa, working as a volunteer in a childrens orphanage in Nairobi.

In her spare time, Maria enjoys reading, eating good food and spending time with her gorgeous dog 'Gypsy'.

Michelle Tuck, ACVN

Michelle graduated from Box Hill Tafe in 2010, having completed certificate IV in veterinary nursing. Michelle previously worked at the Yarra Ranges Animal Hospital and joined our team at Bundoora in 2010.

Michelle is currently studying the Diploma in Emergency & Critical Care as she has a strong interest in emergency nursing.

In her spare time, Michelle enjoys water skiing, netball, spending time with friends and family and playing with her 3 dogs and 2 cats!

Michael Warrillow, ACVN

Michael joined the Bundoora Veterinary Hospital team in January of 1999 and completed his certificate in veterinary nursing in the same year at Box Hill Tafe. He went on to complete his advanced certificate in veterinary nursing the following year.

Michael has a keen interest in surgical nursing and assists surgical specialist Dr Roger Clarke in his day to day procedures. As a senior nurse, he is involved in staff training and mentoring both within the clinic and with their studies. Michael also plays an important role of ongoing maintenance around the clinics.

 

When not at work Michael enjoys keeping fit, gardening, the great outdoors and spending time with his family and friends.

He continues to enjoy his nursing 'because everyday throws a new challenge and there is always something new to learn about veterinary care'.

Nicole Harper

Nicole has worked as a vet nurse for 5 years in a small animal practice in South East Melbourne. She is soon to graduate with a Bachelor of Biological Sciences from La Trobe University. Nicole is also currently undertaking her cert 4 in veterinary nursing.

In her spare time, Nicole enjoys watching movies, playing with her dog "Sammy" and travelling around Australia.

Sinead McAuley, B.An.Vet.Bio.Sc

Sinead joined our nursing team at Bundoora in October of 2010 after successfully graduating from her Bachelor of Animal  and Veterinary Bioscience (majoring in zoology) at LaTrobe University. Sinead is now currently completing her certificate 4 in veterinary nursing.

Sinead is also a volunteer with Wildlife Rescuers, which involves rescuing, transporting and caring for injured and orphaned wildlife.

In her spare time, Sinead loves spending time with her horse "Mr Wilson" and her staffie x "Chevy".
